Indian nurse comparing Goethe, telc, and ÖSD German language exams for nursing jobs in Germany

Goethe vs telc vs ÖSD: Which Is the Best German Exam for Indian Nurses?

Choosing a German exam looks like a small decision, until you book the wrong one. For Indian nurses, the certificate can affect nursing recognition in Germany, the visa file and how soon you start work. So which is the best German exam for Indian nurses: Goethe, telc or ÖSD? It depends on your target state, your strengths and exam availability. This guide compares all three.

Why German Exam Choice Matters for Nursing Jobs in Germany

Demand for nurses in Germany is strong. The Federal Employment Agency reports only 57 unemployed qualified nurses for every 100 advertised vacancies, and the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) projects a shortage of 280,000 to 690,000 nurses by 2049. That keeps nursing jobs in Germany open to prepared applicants.

But a language certificate is part of your file. The Bavarian State Office for Nursing, for example, requires a B2 certificate before it issues the licence to use the nursing title. An exam your authority does not accept, or a certificate that has expired, can cost months.

Which German Exams Do Authorities Accept for Nursing Recognition?

Each authority sets its own list. Bavaria accepts Goethe, telc and ÖSD B2 certificates, and Hesse lists them too. Berlin’s page for non-EU nurses names Goethe-Institut, telc, TestDaF and ECL, so ÖSD is missing there. Berlin also launched its own nursing language exam in 2024, which shows how much local rules differ.

Validity differs too. Berlin wants certificates no older than 3 years, while the German Embassy in India asks for B2 for care professions, not older than one year, in its recognition-visa guidance. Time your exam so the certificate is still valid when you submit it.

Goethe-Zertifikat B2 vs Goethe-Test PRO Pflege

The Goethe-Institut offers two relevant exams:

  • Goethe-Zertifikat B2: the general B2 exam, with reading (65 minutes), listening (about 40), writing (75) and a 15-minute pair speaking exam.
  • Goethe-Test PRO Pflege: a nursing-specific exam that counts as a B2 certificate. The digital, adaptive reading and listening part takes 60 to 90 minutes, writing covers nursing reports and messages (75 minutes), and speaking uses simulated nurse–patient conversations and a patient handover.

The Goethe-Institut says the BAMF and the German Foreign Office recognise the PRO Pflege exam as B2, but it also states that the exam is booked for groups, with date and time arranged in advance. Individual nurses should confirm availability with their local centre. Goethe’s strengths are its name recognition and a nursing-specific option.

telc Deutsch B1·B2 Pflege: Format and Strengths

According to telc, the telc Deutsch B1·B2 Pflege tests reading, listening, writing and speaking at B1 and B2, with texts that reflect everyday nursing work and a report-writing task based on typical nursing reports. The oral exam is a pair exam of about 16 minutes with 20 minutes of preparation. It is available digitally, as a hybrid or on paper, and cannot be taken in parts. telc is a full member of ALTE.

Because the exam covers B1 and B2, confirm that you reach the B2 result your authority requires. A general telc Deutsch B2 is also available, so check which version your authority prefers.

ÖSD Zertifikat B2 for Nursing: Format and Strengths

The Austrian language diploma ÖSD offers a nursing variant, ÖSD Zertifikat B2 / Pflege und medizinische Berufe, with content based on typical situations in nursing, elderly care and hospitals in German-speaking countries. It has two modules, a written exam (reading, listening, writing) and an individual oral exam of 15 to 20 minutes, and you can take them separately. Two examiners assess each candidate, and paper and digital versions exist. ÖSD also offers a free placement test.

Caution: acceptance varies, and Berlin’s list omits ÖSD, so verify acceptance before you register.

Goethe vs telc vs ÖSD: Which Is Best for Indian Nurses?

No exam is best for everyone. Ask yourself:

  • Does your authority accept it? This is the first filter.
  • Do you want a nursing-specific exam? Goethe-Test PRO Pflege, telc B1·B2 Pflege and ÖSD B2 Pflege all use healthcare tasks.
  • Can you reach a centre? Check dates and locations in India early.
  • How do you perform in speaking exams? Goethe-Zertifikat B2 and telc use pair formats, while ÖSD’s nursing variant is individual.
  • When will you apply? Time the exam so the certificate is valid at submission.

Goethe is a common choice because of its name recognition, while telc suits nurses who prefer its nursing-focused, dual-level format. ÖSD can work well where your authority accepts it. Whichever you choose, German language for nurses is more than exam practice, so train for handovers, patient conversations and care documentation.

Nurse Salary in Germany: Why Your Certificate Matters

Language proof opens the way to the qualified role, and the role shapes your pay. The Federal Employment Agency reports a median gross nurse salary in Germany of €4,124 per month for full-time nurses in 2024, and its research institute IAB puts registered nurses in general nursing at €4,329. The agency’s May 2026 report also shows that 64% of nurses from Triple Win countries, which include India, work as qualified nurses, while among foreign nurses overall only about half do.
